Today's business spotlight features Over the Moon Ice Cream, a shop serving dairy and vegan ice cream made on site!
Tell us about your business
Over the Moon offers house-made ice cream in cones, cups, shakes, and sundaes, as well as pints and ice cream sandwiches (which we just introduced!). We also have kitty cups and pup cups for our furry friends. We make all of our ice cream on site so it's always fresh and creamy. We opened in the summer of 2022, and were the first scoop shop in Brewerytown, now an unofficial ice cream district!
Tell us about your founders and the inspiration for opening the business?
Over the Moon is a locally owned family business. Pete makes the ice cream and Emilia runs our social media and community partnerships. When we started the journey of opening a small business, our only baby was a fuzzy chihuahua, but we now have twin baby girls! It has been pointed out to us that we are now officially a Mom and Pop ice cream shop! After spending pandemic couped up and not venturing far from our home in Fairmount, we realized that there was nowhere local that we could walk to and get ice cream. We decided that needed to change, and so we opened Over the Moon. Our goal is to create a space where residents can come and feel welcome, and enjoy one of life's simple pleasures, ice cream. We currently employ four scoopers from the neighborhood, who you'll meet at our walk-up window.
What makes you stand out?
Our ice cream is made on site so it's always fresh and creamy. We rotate our flavors so there is always something new to try. AND we have vegan and gluten-free options. We try our best to accommodate anyone who wants to enjoy a yummy treat. (Try the vegan options; you'll likely be surprised by how creamy it is!) We only used recycled or compostible packaging; we never use plastic.
What current offerings would catch our eye?
Our menu is always changing so we always have something new to try. You can enjoy a scoop on one of our bench seats outside our shop, or take a pint home to enjoy on the couch. We recently added ice cream sandwiches as well. Our current top sellers are Cafe de Leche with Brownie Chunks, Pumpkin Pie, and our Vegan Black Raspberry. If you like things a little different then go for our Chilli Chocolate!
Why do you love working in the Art Museum District?
We live in the neighorhood, so being able to walk a few blocks to work is awesome. And seeing our regular customers out in the neighborhood is fun; we've experienced such a warm and positive response to opening Over the Moon. Our sense of community has really increased, especially among fellow small business owners in the area. There are so many new businesses opening up, so that's sure to grow!
