What You Need to Know About the Girard Avenue Trolley Track Renewal Project

Updated: Oct 7, 2022

This fall, SEPTA will begin the Girard Avenue Trolley Track Renewal project. We're sharing some details below to help our community navigate the upcoming changes. Additional information can be found in SEPTA's Fact Sheet. There's more on the refurbishment of the trolleys themselves in this recent Inquirer article.

WHO: SEPTA and Brewerytown visitors, business owners, employees and residents

WHAT: This project involves the excavation and renewal of the existing trolley tracks on Girard Avenue

WHERE: Girard Avenue (26th to 33rd) and 26th Street (Girard to Poplar)

WHEN: Construction will take place from September 19, 2022, through December 31, 2022.

Project construction will begin September 19th on 26th Street, with crews excavating and renewing the single track between Girard Avenue and Poplar Street. Note, this work will not impact the 26th and Girard intersection. Aside from detour and construction signs in place, Girard Avenue will be clear of SEPTA vehicles and equipment by end of day on Friday, September 30th. Construction on Girard Avenue will begin Monday, October 3rd. At that time, Girard Avenue will be closed between 26th and 28th streets for ramming and excavation activities, etc. While the Avenue will be closed in two-block increments for 2-4 weeks each, the sidewalk will remain open and available throughout.

WHY:

BENEFITS

  • Reduced vibrations – increased continuity with steel tie construction and increased bonding.

  • New and improved track components – smoother ride for trolleys and vehicular traffic.

  • New street surface – new concrete/asphalt paving and line painting.
